Spain, a country in Southern Europe is officially known as Kingdom of Spain. The mainland of Spain is surrounded on the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea (comprising the Balearic Islands), on the north by the Bay of Biscay and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean (containing the Canary Islands off the African coast). Spain shares land borders with Portugal, France, Andorra, Gibraltar, and Morocco. Spain is the biggest country among the three sovereign states that make up the Iberian Peninsula. Madrid Barajas International Airport is located northeast of Madrid's city center, and the most important international and domestic entrance in Spain, the Iberian Peninsula and southern Europe. Since its inception the airport has grown to be one of the most important aviation centers of Europe.
